Tim Hunt & Nikki Wilkes Star in a Spectacular Production of "Patience" by the St David's Players Exeter Barnfield Theatre Tuesday 11 - Saturday 15 October 2016

Nikki Wilkes is Patience

wonderful costumes
The St David's Players performed their first Gilbert & Sullivan opera in 1970 - "Patience" or "Bunthorne's Bride". During the subsequent forty six years the company have continued to stage ever more lavish enactments of Gilbert & Sullivan classics.

and choreography
"Patience" returns this week. The opening night will be on Tuesday. After much preparation of sets, costumes, orchestral arrangements (which make the very most of the eight talented players), choruses and solo numbers, everything is set for a sensational performance.

The fabrics, sets and lighting make this show a feast for the eye from the very outset. Every member of the chorus is beautifully decked out in stunning colours, and create a sense of spectacle which is fully matched by the quality of the singing.

an aesthete
And dancing! Susan Gunn-Johnson has perfected yet another collection of her trademark routines. The central characters and chorus members are constantly in action providing a non-stop feast of fun and excitement.

not the first choice
The 'unattractive' Patience is pursued by two self-obsessed poets Reginald and Archibald, who confuse rather than dazzle Patience with their advances. Patience, who professes not to understand the concept of love at all, is never quite sure what to make of all the attention.

Needless to say, many more characters join the action, creating endless confusion, and each twist in the plot is the cue for another unforgettable and romantic song - always with a comic twist.

is far too popular
William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, despite deploring the need to devote their considerable musical talents to mere popular entertainments, always managed to hit the bullseye with each successive production.

but has the right approach
These clever and comforting stories have never lost their appeal, and always make an audience smile. With so many years of experience, the St David's Players know how to work that magic to maximum effect.
A chorus of rapturous maidens

Once again they are going to delight audiences with their acting, singing, dancing and wit. Each player brings enormous energy to his or her respective character. Each adds subtle and endearing nuances - just enough to make every corner of the stage a little tableau in itself, but never upstaging the main action.
