Victoria Fullick: "Anthos Arts" Assistant Director at the Phonic FM Studio to discuss "Wings in the Way" Tuesday 29 April 2014

Victoria Fullick
Assistant Director of "Anthos Arts"
at the Phonic FM studio
Tuesday 29 April
Many thanks to Victoria Fullick, who joined the "Classical Journey" at 10.45 on Tuesday morning to tell us more about how the "Anthos Arts" project, "Wings in the Way", has been progressing since the visit by the Anthos Arts Artistic Director, Emma-Rose Payne, in January this year.

Twenty students from across Devon have joined the project, four of whom qualified for bursaries to help with travelling and enrolment costs. Many are working towards Arts Awards while they
rehearse and create movement theatre together, under the supervision of the Anthos Arts team.

The final rehearsal will be this Saturday at their Exeter venue, St Luke's College in Heavitree Road. Next Friday, they will give their first public performance at the Cygnet New Theatre in Friar's Gate (above Exeter Quay). Three more performances will follow at Totnes, Honiton and Sidmouth.

Full details are shown in the poster below. For further details contact anthos-arts@outlook.com.

Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" meets Shakespeare's "Romeo & Juliet" A musical masquerade by the Concert Theatre Company at the Barnfield Theatre Thursday 1 May 2014 Press Release from An-Ting Chang

The Rite of Spring/Romeo & Juliet
A Concert Theatre Production

fusing classical ballet and theatre
Exeter Barnfield Theatre
Thursday 1 May

"The Rite of Spring/Romeo and Juliet" is a radical interpretation of Stravinsky’s ballet and orchestral concert work, in the theatrical setting of love and hatred between two Shakespeare’s rivalling households, Capulet and Montague.

Conceived by Concert Theatre, the production uses commedia half masks and piano four-hands to create a music-oriented physical theatre piece through the re-telling of Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy.

Photos: Lidia Crisafulli

The production involves collaboration between concert pianists from the Royal Academy of Music, and actors (plus director) from the Paris school of Jacques Lecoq. The masks are designed and produced by specialists from Trestle Theatre.

The production is supported by Arts Council England.

The latest work by Concert Theatre, a young company combining classical music and theatre in live performance, brings together pianists from the Royal Academy of Music with Lecoq-trained performers and Trestle Theatre to create an exciting reinterpretation of two great classic works.
A visceral marriage of two tales of slaughtered innocence, The Rite of Spring/Romeo and Juliet pairs Stravinsky’s ballet and orchestral concert work with Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy. Performed in four-hand piano and commedia half-mask, the stories interweave passion, rage, despair and sacrifice to create an exciting reinterpretation of two great classic works.

Classical Journey 10am Tuesday 29 April 2014 Choral Evensong at Exeter Cathedral with Colyton Grammar School Senior Choir and David House

Colyton Grammar School Senior Choir
Choral Evensong at Exeter Cathedral
Conductor: David House
Wednesday 23 April

On Wednesday the President at Choral Evensong in the Cathedral was Canon Treasurer Ian Morter. After an organ voluntary by Mark Perry, and introductory prayers and responses by the choir, Canon Morter explained that the Cathedral Choir were taking their 'Post Easter Recess' and the music was being provided by the Colyton Grammar School Senior Choir conducted by the Head of Music at Colyton Grammar School, David House.

Senior Choir

sing in the Cathedral Quire
Organist: Mark Perry
A beautiful performance of Psalm 105, "O give thanks unto the Lord. Call upon his name", was followed by a reading from "The Song of Solomon". The choir then prefaced, and followed, a reading from The Matthew Gospel Chapter 28 with Thomas Tertius Noble's "Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in B minor". Noble had slightly adjusted the words of the dismissal to create a gently lyrical song with colourful organ accompaniment.

The Nunc Dimittis was not the end of the choral service, however. The choir sang William Smith's "Preces & Responses" without accompaniment. Each prayer was lovingly delivered by a solo soprano (name as yet unknown!) followed by perfectly timed and controlled answering words from the full choir. Prayers for Intercession were followed by an anthem with organ, "Most Glorious Lord of Life" by Bob Chilcott. Finally the clergy left the quire, and the congregation broke up to the sound of another organ voluntary played by Mark Perry.

David House had prepared the choir meticulously, and the performance at the service was confident and controlled, while also being extremely moving. The Colyton students filled the Cathedral with emotive and sweet sound. During the service, there was no mention of how often the Colyton Choir would be coming to the Cathedral, but Colyton music teacher, Melanie Lester, explained that the school's choral evensong is now an annual event. We can look out for a return visit just after Easter 2015.

will be at StJohn's ChurchBridgetown, Totnes
on Sunday 27th April at 3pm

Malcolm Latcham

Pressenda Ensemble

The programme features three Concertos by Vivaldi.

Nicknamed "The Red Priest" because of his hair (not his politics),
he was appointed teacher of violin at the Ospedale della Pietà,
one of four institutions devoted to the care
of orphaned and abandoned children in Venice .

Vivaldi composed over 500 concertos,
mostly intended to be performed
by the youngsters of the school,
probably at the Sunday morning services,
which were reputed to be more like
fully fledged concerts than an act of worship!

Also featured in this programme is music composed
by other musicians equally noted as teachers:

Imogen Holst: Teacher at Dartington College of Arts 1943-5;

Clive Jenkins: Director of Music at Plymouth College (two pieces);

Harold Darke: Organist at St Michael's Cornhill, City of London;

Antonín Dvořák: Composition Teacher, Prague Conservatorium.
