Classical Journey 1 October 2013 'Cathedra 900' Special Guest Crispian Steele-Perkins

Crispian Steele-Perkins
Baroque Trumpeter
Guest on this week's 'Classical Journey'

Tune in on Tuesday (1st October) at 10am to hear Crispian Steele-Perkins discussing this week's multi-media extravaganza at Exeter Cathedral. (Three nights only - Wednesday, Thursday and Friday)

'900 Years of Light' will showcase extraordinary photographs taken in the Cathedral by Mark Ware (and projected onto the structure of the Cathedral itself) and films by Michael Bickerton. The evening will be introduced by actor Emily Kreider.

Crispian will provide music with a classical quartet - and talk the audience through the action.

For a preview of this exciting show, Crispian and promoter Gillian Taylor will be in the Phonic FM studio from 10am to tell us more - and Crispian has suggested he bring his trumpets!

Hope you can listen!

Allegri Quartet 60th Anniversary Concert in Devon Blundell's School Tiverton Friday 18 October 2013 Press Release from Julie Hill

The Allegri Quartet
'Cello: Vanessa Lucas-Smith
Violin: Ofer Falk
Viola: Dorothea Vogel
Violin: Raphael Todes

ALLEGRI STRING QUARTET
Big School
Friday 18th October
7:30pm

The internationally renowned Allegri Quartet will be revisiting Blundell’s School Tiverton on Friday 18 October. We have had a long association with this Quartet and it is rewarding that they would like to visit in this their 60th Anniversary year since their foundation. They have seen a number of changes over the period – and indeed while they have been visiting us.

The programme is an exciting one including a new piece, with its first performance at the Salisbury this year, a Quartet by Haydn, and Tchaikovsky’s First Quartet.

The members of the Quartet are:

Ofer Falk, who has been a soloist with Israeli Orchestras and performed at the Bolshoi. He was a founder member of the Schidlof Quartet in 1994, a particularly significant fact for us as Peter Schidlof was a pupil Blundell’s School. He is a Professor at the Trinity College of Music and plays a violin made by Amati of Cremona in 1661.

Rafael Todes, having read Economics at Cambridge went on to study at the Guildhall School of Music with Yfrah Neaman. He played for the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra with Sir Simon Rattle, and was also a founder member of the Schidlof Quartet. He teaches at the Junior Academy and plays a violin made by Maggini of Brescia of c 1600.

Dorothea Vogel, having been born in Switzerland studied in the USA and at The Guildhall in London. She was principal viola in the Gustav Mahler Orchestra and the World Youth Orchestra. She has appeared as soloist in Zurich and at the Wigmore Hall. Her viola was made by Rastelli of Genoa in 1800.

Vanessa Lucas-Smith is a graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music and became a Junior Fellow at Trinity College. She received coaching from members of the Amadeus Quartet (Peter Schidlof was a founding member of this Quartet) amongst others. She has appeared at the Wigmore Hall, and Queen Elizabeth Hall. She teaches chamber music and is a keen amateur footballer. Her cello was made by the Forster family in England in the late eighteenth century.

Tickets are available from Mrs Carole Francis (01884 232401) in the main School Office, priced at £10, but free for children and students.

Crispian Steele-Perkins comes to Exeter Cathedral 'Cathedra 900' culminates with '900 Years of Light' Three Nights Only Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, 2/3/4 October 2013 Multimedia Exhibition and Classical Quartet - Message from Gillian Taylor

900 YEARS OF LIGHT

Crispian Steele-Perkins
Baroque Trumpeter

Exeter Cathedral will be the setting for a multimedia response to the building’s 900 year history and the contributions that craftspeople have made during that time. 900 Years of Light is the culmination of Cathedra 900, an Arts Council England funded project by visual and multimedia artist Mark Ware.

Mark Ware
photographs Exeter Cathedral for Cathedra 900
(and is himself photographed by Peter Stephens)
For the last 18 months, Mark has been exploring the Cathedral and interpreting its art and architecture through photography, abstract photomontages, 3D artwork and sound. 900 Years of Light will be an evening of film, readings, music and the premiere of Mark Ware’s video composition accompanied by specially arranged music performed by internationally acclaimed trumpeter, Crispian Steele-Perkins and a string trio.

The 900 Years of Light video composition will bring together Mark’s images showing details, patterns and architectural shapes, creating illusions of stillness and movement. During the screening of the work, the cathedral will appear to breathe as its vaulted ceiling is cast with slowly changing light, and the live music resonates throughout the building.

Mark, who is based in Devon, is a visual and multimedia artist whose current work reflects his altered perception of the world brought about by a stroke in 1996 at the age of 39. Mark said:

“Stroke affects everything I do and how I perceive the world. It influences all my art and it keeps me in the ‘here and now’ because of the physical and mental challenges it presents me with. When I look at the images I’ve created, I remember what the temperature was, whether I was in pain, and every detail of how I felt at the time.

“These images are my response to the cathedral, interwoven with music and spoken narrative, and I hope that they will offer a meaningful and rewarding response to the building, helping people to feel at peace and to come away altered in a positive way.

“Cathedra 900 is a profoundly rewarding project. I’m privileged and honoured to be participating in Exeter Cathedral’s 900 year timeline, contributing to centuries of artistic activity within its walls.”

Crispian Steele-Perkins will speak about the music, explaining how it fits into the Cathedral’s timeline. The evening’s events will be introduced by actor Emily Kreider, and will include contributions by filmmaker Michael Bickerton.

A collection of over 1500 of Mark’s digital images are to be donated to Exeter Cathedral’s archive after this event, and Mark hopes that these will provide inspiration for future generations.

900 Years of Light takes place at 7.30 on 2, 3 & 4 October.

Tickets are £5 and available from the Cathedral website or at the Cathedral.

The Academy of Ancient Music - 40th Anniversary Message from Music Director Richard Egarr

Looking back on 40 years of baroque and classical music

On 17–19 September 1973, Christopher Hogwood gathered together a group of musicians in a recording studio in London. The Academy of Ancient Music was born. This week we celebrate our 40th anniversary.

Since 1973 we've made over 300 recordings and performed thousands of concerts across the globe — and so it's been a difficult task to chose highlights from the past four decades. But from our complete Mozart symphony cycle (described as "the most important recording of the 80s") to a 2009 performance of Purcell in a Roman amphitheatre in Libya, we've compiled some of our favourite moments in a new timeline on our website (http://www.aam.co.uk/#/40/40.aspx).

Music making depends on three things: composers, musicians and audiences. We're spoilt for choice in the first two regards. But we also never forget how indebted we are to you, our audience, for your support and enthusiasm. The past forty years simply wouldn't have happened without you; we look forward to continuing to make music with you for many years to come.

Richard Egarr Music Director

Visit our new timeline on the AAM website (http://www.aam.co.uk/#/40/40.aspx)

PERSPECTIVES
We've also gathered together thoughts on the AAM from a number of people within and outside the musical world.

Teju Cole, writer and photographer: “I first became aware of a certain aural magic when I heard the AAM about fifteen years ago. The hairpin turns reminded me of a classic car racing along country roads, all exhilaration and control..."

Tim West, actor: “If I were asked to find something to criticise about the Academy of Ancient Music, it could only be its name. There is nothing rigidly Academic about their approach, nor is their Music essentially Ancient: I have heard them play Mendelssohn with the same intelligent, loving care that they give to Corelli. What distinguishes their concerts is their desire to communicate, in presentation and performance, their affection and respect for pieces which very often audiences are hearing for the first time.”
