This year's Festival of Arts at Dawlish ended at the Church of St Gregory in Church Street. Festival Director Andrew Fuller introduced the Gala Concert with a short speech. He recalled that the parish organist, and proprietor of the 'Dawlish Gazette', Jim Holman founded the Festival in 1953.

Soprano Donna-Marie Broomfield (née Hughes) then took over as Master of Ceremonies and introduced herself, and the other musicians for the night. Tenor Matthew Wilding is Donna-Marie's partner in the 'Belle Voci' Duo. Mezzosoprano Helen Haviland, who trained at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, has worked with Donna-Marie in Opera South-West for many years, and is now Singing Teacher at Torquay Girls' Grammar School. Joining Helen for the evening were the Grammar School Chamber Choir which she directs. It was pointed out that the girls were to be particularly praised for their wonderful performances, as they were simultaneously revising for the A Level examinations.

In addition to vocal music there were also violin and piano duets performed by the duo "Elegance" comprising pianist Ekaterina Shetliffe and violinist Yulia Northridge, both graduates of the Moscow State Conservatory. Ekaterina & Yulia, and their music, have featured on the 'Classical Journey' many times, both on Phonic FM in Exeter and Soundart Radio at Dartington Hall. Their feature on the previous day's broadcast from Exeter can be heard on Mixcloud (Friday 3 June 2016).

Ekaterina teaches piano in Paignton, and has also performed several concerts with Peruvian coloratura soprano Claudia Alvarez Calderón, a regular guest on Soundart Radio. Claudia and Ekaterina appeared on 'Classical Journey' together a year ago. (Available on Mixcloud.) Ekaterina, Yulia and Claudia will be giving a morning recital of classical music at St Mary's Church in Totnes on Saturday 9 July 2016, and an evening recital of Russian music at Lupton House in Churston Ferrers (Paignton) on Sunday 10 July 2016. (See full details below - and Claudia will be on air on Soundart Radio between 3 & 6pm on Sunday 19 June 2016 to discuss her last concert - with recordings - and the upcoming Totnes & Paignton concerts with Ekaterina & Yulia.)

Donna Marie was a superb host, and throughout the concert shared her encyclopaedic knowledge of, and infectious enthusiasm for, opera and opera arias. Andrew Fuller was himself persuaded to perform in an operatic trio shortly before the interval. Everyone performed brilliantly. The Grammar School girls showed no sign of being overstretched or anxious as a result of the busy schedule and their singing was skilled and delightful. Their Director of Music, Helen Haviland, also sang magnificently in many arias, duets and trios with Matthew & Donna-Marie.

Special mention must be given to Ekaterina Shetliffe, who played in every item on the programme. The church piano was being particularly recalcitrant on the evening of the concert, but Ekaterina tamed it with consummate skill. All the performers were at pains to show the profound appreciation for Ekaterina's dedication to duty and impressive musicality.

There was no printed programme for the evening, but the photographs below will give some idea of what the audience enjoyed. Abundant gratitude is in order for the work of all the Festival Committee members involved in organising the gala event, and to all the superbly talented performers.
