On Saturday 22nd November, EMG Symphony
Orchestra returns to the Great Hall at Exeter University
with an exciting (but accessible) programme of English music. EMG Symphony Orchestra is thrilled to welcome
BBC Young Musician of the Year 2012, Laura van der Heijden as the soloist in
Elgar’s intimate, melancholic, emotional Cello
Concerto, a conversation between solo cello and orchestra, written in the
aftermath of the First World War. Laura
van der Heijden is a rising star and this is an exciting opportunity to hear a
young cellist whose playing has been described by Radio 3’s Nicholas Daniel as
“a completely extraordinary performance of incredible creative intensity…”
EMG Symphony Orchestra is also delighted to welcome Alistair
Ganley, Artistic Director of Exeter’s Cygnet Theatre, as the narrator in
Benjamin Britten’s Young Person’s Guide
to the Orchestra. Drawing further on
local talent, the programme also features new work from young composer and
musician Alfie Pugh. The concert opens
with Dame Ethel Smyth’s exhilarating Overture
to her Cornish-based opera The Wreckers.
The concert is in aid of Exeter Leukaemia Fund (ELF),
a local charity which supports everyone from 16 years old, who are referred to
the Haematology Centre at the RD&E
Hospital or the North Devon
Hospital . ELF has a programme of community support
services, which aim to make things easier during what is often a difficult and
challenging time, such as accommodation and assistance with transport, as well
as providing support services within hospitals.
(£6, £5 and £4 for students and under-16s)
and are available from Exeter
