Classical Journey 10am Tuesday 6 May 2014 - English Touring Opera win prestigious Olivier Award Interview with Michael Rosewell

Michael Rosewell
Director of Music
English Touring Opera
This Tuesday's "Classical Journey" will be joined by the Musical Director of English Touring Opera, Michael Rosewell. The ETO will be here next Tuesday (13th May), bringing Mozart's "Magic Flute" and two modern operas, Britten's "Paul Bunyan" and Tippett's "King Priam". Michael will have plenty to talk about. He will be conducting "Magic Flute" on Thursday and "King Priam" on Saturday. Also the ETO were awarded the prestigious Olivier Award for Oustanding Achievement in Opera on 13th April this year. It was Bunyan and Priam that tipped the scale in favour of ETO. Full details on this morning's programme. (see blogpost for more background)

Michael Rosewell will join us at 11.20. Before that there will be time to hear an extract from the Bach B minor Mass, recorded the previous night at a rehearsal of the East Devon Choral Society for their concert at Tiverton Baptist Church on Saturday (10th May).

Continuing the baroque theme, there will be a new recording of Ben Pennington's "Starling Octet" singing an a capela madrigal by Claudio Monteverdi.

Victoria Fullick, who was in the Phonic FM studio for last Tuesday's Classical Journey, was at St Luke's College in Heavitree Road, Exeter, on Saturday afternoon for a final rehearsal of the inaugural theatre production by Anthos Arts students, "Wings in the Way". The students discussed their work after the rehearsal, and we can hear extracts on today's show.

Hilary Boxer, who is performing in Handel's oratorio "Samson" and Bach's "B Minor Mass" this week, was at Lympstone on Sunday for the second of David Cottam's "Eloquent Guitar" series of concerts. As well as an elaborate Suite in A minor by Bach, they also played several of David's own compositions and some beautiful music by Agustin Barrios. They also played a new composition by Plymtree composer Charles West - a sweet lullaby, which we should be able to include.

Sunday was also the day for the monthly "Earworms" concert for children, put on by Exeter Contemporary Sounds. Baritone Julian Rippon was there to sing for the children, and proved a very talented children's entertainer - the children certainly sat up and took notice of  his voice. Julian also tried his hand at percussion, playing Leroy Anderson's "Typewriter" flawlessly on a genuine Olympia Elite made in 1933 - a new experience for many of the children.

We can hear Anderson's original recording - from 1951. To go with that composer Simon Belshaw has sent a recording of the Contemporary Sounds quartet playing his own composition for video, audio, piano and string quartet, "Between the Moon and the Earth". This definitive recording will transport us on a journey with Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders on the Apollo VIII mission to orbit the moon.

We can also hear a sample of the extraordinary bass clarinet improvisations of Andy Visser at Sam Richards' "Jazzlab" at the Bay Horse in Totnes on Sunday. Later this week, Andy will join Sam, Tim Sayer and friends at the Bakery Yard in Plymouth (on the same night as the B minor Mass - Saturday 10 May) for Plymouth's first 'Nonclassical' night, organised by Plymouth music student Debbie Martindale.
