William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan created fourteen comic operas at the end of the nineteenth century. Their own favourite - and a favourite with audiences - was 'The Yeomen of the Guard'. Set in the Tower of London during the reign of Henry VIII, it has everything - love, intrigue, comedy and tragedy.
The St David's Players will be performing this delightful, but shocking, opera every night from Tuesday to Saturday this week, at the Barnfield Theatre in Exeter.
The superb sopranos Penny Daw and Judyth Aarons will be singing the parts of Elsie Maynard and Phoebe Merryl. Baritones Tim Hunt and Keith Wadlan will play their opposite numbers - Jack point and Sergeant Merryl. (full cast below)
Penny Daw has been voted 'Best Female Voice' at the annual Gilbert and Sullivan Festival - twice!
A new voice with the St David's Players - but one familiar to Exeter Opera lovers and Classical Journey listeners - is mezzo soprano Carolyn Harries who recently appeared with tenor Bobby Jeffrey in an opera concert at Chagford and Upton Pyne. (details)
To find out more about the opera, the production, and the St David's Players, tune in to Phonic FM from 10 until 12 this Tuesday morning for the 'Classical Journey'.
Shortly after 11am Penny Daw and Judith Aarons will be visiting the studio, with the President (and Assistant Producer) of the St David's Players, Susan James. They will be able to tell us all we need to know about this glorious production.
