Topsham Art Room are currently hosting an exhibition of paintings, drawings and prints by Benedict Rubbra. “Nature is the main source of Rubbra’s inspiration. From early youth to maturity he has been acutely aware of art’s kinship with nature. He sees the artist as part of the natural cycle, part of the process of growth.”  “The rhythms of nature, the cyclical processes that link genesis, decay and regeneration, the patterns and harmonies to be found within natural and man-made forms –these are the essential concerns that underlie all Benedict Rubbra’s work.”
This Sunday two local musicians, who are very sympathetic to those sentiments, will be performing a selection of pieces to complement the exhibition from 6pm this Sunday.
Chris Caldwell and Susie Hodder-Williams are an inspired musical duo.  They live on Dartmoor and often perform at the Long Room of the Drewe Arms in Drewsteignton.  They are also well known throughout the UK and tour extensively. There music has been heard on BBC Radio 3’s ‘Late Junction’ and, more recently, Phonic FM’s ‘Classical Journey’.
They were last seen in Exeter on Sunday 21 November last year, at Gallery 36 in Denmark Road.  With Poet James Turner they performed a selection of music and poetry entitled ‘Time and Distance’ which astounded the audience. Their amazing skill and technique, together with their highly inspired and original style, has to be heard to be fully appreciated. Their subtle overlaying and combination of sounds is quite breathtaking.
On Sunday Chris and Susie will be joined by special guest Rick Bolton, playing ’cello and guitar, for a selection of music by Bach, Steve Goss, Nick Drake, Karl Jankins – and their own compositions and improvisations of course.  Anyone under 21 can attend free and tickets for those over 21 cost £10, which includes wine. The audience will be free to enjoy the exhibition while listening to the music, or bring their own folding chairs and make themselves comfortable for the whole performance.
This will be a popular performance, so booking is recommended:
