Soprano Mary O'Shea
Tuesday's special guest was Mary O'Shea.  We heard her wonderful recording of the motet 'Nulla in Mundo Pax Sincera' by Antonio Vivaldi.

Nulla in mundo pax sincera
sine felle; pura et vera,
dulcis Jesu, est in te.

Inter poenas et tormenta
vivit anima contenta
casti amoris sola spe.

In this world there is no honest peace
free from bitterness; pure and true
peace, sweet Jesus, lies in Thee.

Amidst punishment and torment
lives the contented soul,
chaste love its only hope.

We also chatted about her singing (and violin and dancing) her work as soprano with the St Peter's Singers at the Cathedral, and her CD release of her own compositions, 'DollyO' which is available  from Bar Venezia on Exeter's  Quayside.

(Anyone listening from the beginning will know that Mary had lost her internet connection some time the night before and was joining in without being able to hear the show or read the playlist (above) which I had sent her.  She did incredibly well under the circumstances.  The only thing we couldn't remember was the name of the soprano singing 'Ich foge dir gleichfalls...' in John Eliot Gardiner's 'St John Passion'.  It was Ruth Holton of course.)

Circus Berzerkus: Ben Cornish and Steve Eldridge
By way of light relief we were visited at 11am by Ben Cornish of 'Circus Berzerkus'.  This comedy acrobatic and juggling double act is currently touring the UK playing to packed houses.  They represent a rare survival of traditional music hall slapstick comedy, extremely skilled and entertaining.  As Ben put it so succinctly, 'Morecambe and Wise with juggling'.  This highly entertaining show is also suitable for children of all ages (good clean fun!)  We are very fortunate to have an early evening performance here in Exeter at St Stephens Church at 6pm this Friday (12 Nov).  No school tomorrow and finishing in time for young children to get to bed, so bring the whole family!  More details here.

Many thanks to Edgar who reminded me that the 'Concert Gems' section of the show is often hard to follow, especially if you don't have paper and pencil to hand.  (Apologies also for the lateness of this section - guests must come first!)  The concert listings were as follows:
