Ruth Molins Tuesday 17 February 2015

Ruth Molins

Two weeks ago, flautist Ruth Molins was at the Phonic FM studio to join the 'Classical Journey' programme and discuss her many musical projects. The recording is now available online. (See the link below.)

The opening music is the tail-end of the Leopold Stokowski's 1941 recording of Sergei Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf" with the All-American Youth Orchestra and narration by Basil Rathbone. The full remastered version is available at various sites online. Ruth and her flute were Prokofiev's bird in an all-day four-sitting performance at Tiverton High School on Thursday 26 February. Over one thousand children visited from all over Devon to hear this classical masterpiece. The narrator was Patrick Romer.

A dress rehearsal on Wednesday 25 February was recorded in Crediton by Mike Gluyas.

Mike Brett was also there to make a video.

Ruth also discussed preparations for Mozart's Flute and Harp Concerto, which she will play with harpist Sally Jenkins and Brian Northcott's Exeter Symphony Orchestra at Southernhay Church in Exeter on Saturday 14 March.

The following week (Friday 20 March), Ruth will play 'Clock Works' with Pete Canter's 'Off the Cuff' improvisers orchestra as a Vibraphonic event at the Exeter Phoenix.

In April Ruth will be playing alongside multi-instrumentalist Jennifer Campbell (Jen's playing clarinet on this occasion) in the Sidmouth Arts Club Operatic Society (SACOS) in their production of Rogers and Hammerstein's 'South Pacific' at the Manor Pavilion. Ruth and Jennifer will also be joined by Sophie Brewer for two 'Flute Cake' flute trio concerts in April. Flute Cake are also booked for the Budleigh Festival in July.

Ruth also hinted at a 'Thunderbirds Wind Band Day' led by Alfie Pugh, celebrating the music of Barry Gray - who wrote the theme music to 'Fireball XL5', 'Stingray', 'Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons', 'Joe 90' and 'Space: 1999' as well as 'Thunderbirds'.

There was no time to mention two performances of Bach's 'St Matthew Passion' with Ottery St Mary and Bridgwater Choral Societies, a performance of Bach's 'Easter Oratorio' with the Exeter Bach Society, and Elgar's 'In London Town' and Copland's 'Fanfare for the Common Man' with Exeter Symphony Orchestra.
