MEDIA RELEASE

Brilliant young solo cellist comes to Exeter

As part of his Cello Pilgrimage, Orlando Jopling has been invited to give a cello recital at St Michael & All Angels’ Church, Alphington, Exeter, to help raise funds for this beautiful mediaeval church, which is in the process of being extended and updated.  The concert takes place at 6 pm on Sunday 3 March.
Orlando has now given well over 75 recitals of Bach's Suites for solo cello around the country, helping to raise nearly £55,000 for the restoration of churches. These range from huge light-filled Wren masterpieces in city centres to intimate and atmospheric medieval churches on remote moorland. His recital in Alphington is supported by the Exeter & District Classical Music Trust.
His audiences have been full of praise, as can be seen from the following comments:
Thank you for such a beautiful recital. Everyone was just completely bowled over by your wonderful music. I have been stopped over and over in the last few days with people saying how brilliant the afternoon was.’  from Enid Tarbox, organiser of Orlando's recital in Peterchurch, Herefordshire.
And ‘We had a wonderful evening yesterday and are still on a high from it. All were delighted with the performance and Orlando’s delightful manner in which he explained the music. I was so impressed by the technical ability he showed and by the amount of emotion he evoked from each section of the Suites.’ From Jenni Moseling, organiser of Orlando’s recital in Broad Hinton, July 2010.
Orlando's teachers include the legendary William Pleeth, Alexander Baillie and Raphael Wallfisch. He is now musical director of the 140-year-old Royal Orchestral Society in London and has also conducted the English Chamber Orchestra, both in the recording studio and on the concert platform, London Mozart Players, Irish Chamber Orchestra and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. He has conducted over 25 opera productions and co-founded Stanley Hall Opera and the contemporary opera specialist Tete a Tete.
He has also performed with many pop stars including Sinead O’Connor and Martha Wainwright, and his music for TV has been heard on all the major UK channels. He is also Artistic Director of Roman River Festival in coastal Essex.
There will be wine and other refreshments provided and an opportunity to buy a double CD of Orlando's recording of the complete Bach Suites for solo cello. Tickets are £8 (or £15 for two) and are available through meadowcroft42@btinternet.com or ring 490963 for further details.
