Ashburton Live "Fly Yeti Fly" Royal Oak Ashburton Sunday Afternoon 15 May Lilli Unwin Band, Pete Canter's "Sky" & Noëlle et les Papillons St Lawrence Chapel Sunday 15 May, Saturday 21 May & Saturday 28 May 2016 Press Release with full details from Andy Williamson - plus news of Daniel Marcus Clark's"Ear Films" at Dartington Hall

Lilli Unwin

Mellow Grooves and Magical Stories are promised by the Lilli Unwin Band this Sunday, 15 May at St Lawrence Chapel Ashburton.

To get an idea, visit Lilli's Soundcloud Page and listen to her msuic, including the georgeous song ‘Icarus’ right here right now! These few samples, are the promise of great things live.

The drummer in her band, Corrie Dick must be something rather special, as he won BBC Radio Scotland’s Young Jazz Musician of the Year. He’s involved in projects with some of the top jazz musicians in the UK at the moment, so I’m expecting great things.

Lilli Unwin is in fact a local girl, as she hails from Totnes where her dad, pianist Tom Unwin has been a pillar of the jazz community for many years (he is playing at Ashburton Live on Saturday 28 May). She left home to go study jazz at Trinity College in London, where many fine musicians have studied, and to teach. She graduated last year, and has created some impressive work.

This looks like being a really lovely evening of music played some fabulous musicians – please come!

"BhKb"
"Intervals" – by popular request, we now have short intervals on Sunday nights, about 15 minutes between the sets from 99.15ish. You can still nip over to the pub if you like, just not for too long!

Last week "BhKb" (Bruno Heinen & Kristian Borring) gave a really dazzling performance of their Bill Evans-inspired music, worthy of any stage in any club or concert hall in the world.

It would be great to have a full chapel for the Lilli Unwin Band this Sunday - 15 May - at 8pm.

"Fly Yeti Fly"
Also this Sunday, 15 May, in the afternoon, a duo with the great name 'Fly Yeti Fly' will be gracing the stage at the Royal Oak in Ashburton from 2-4pm. Look them up - they sound great!

'Fly Yeti Fly' is the guitar and vocals duo of Darren Fisher & Lorna Somerville, singing original songs with classical, folk and country inspired melodies and lyrics.

Next Week Pete Canter & his "Sky" project will be at St Lawrence Chapel on Saturday 21 May.

Local sax player, Tony Harley caught a performance of this music in Exeter last week, and wrote this short review:

Pete Canter
“Pete Canter has drawn an excellent and creative group together featuring Lucy Welsman ('Cello), Matt Johns (Piano), Valere Speranza (Bass) and Pete Canter himself on Tenor and Soprano saxes. Honestly Pete’s thoughtful and innovative compositions caress the ears and spark one’s attention. The tunes have a definite European folk flavour, enhanced with extra colours and a kind of classical airiness by the Lucy’s full-toned 'cello. But it doesn’t end there, the pieces provide a context for genuine interactive creativity in improvisation from whole group. Expect a special, musically exciting evening.”

Last night (Thursday 12 May) I went along to the second 'After Dark' event at Dartington Hall. Daniel Marcus Clark, musician and maker of Earfilms, has put together this series of interesting events in unusual performance spaces around the Dartington estate. Last night, we started by being shepherded onto a coach, blindfolded and being taken on a short drive, then led down a path into the middle of some woods to a glade twinkling with lights and a fire, plus bar, stage and a large screen where we were entertained into the night… It was fabulous – check out the rest of the events here.

Ashburton Live sessions for May 2016 will end with Noëlle (Rollings) et les Papillons
- on Saturday 28 May.
