ALLEGRI STRING QUARTET

The internationally renowned Allegri Quartet will be
revisiting Blundell’s School Tiverton on Friday 18 October. We have had a long
association with this Quartet and it is rewarding that they would like to visit
in this their 60th Anniversary year since their foundation. They
have seen a number of changes over the period – and indeed while they have been
visiting us.
The programme is an exciting one including a new piece, with its
first performance at the Salisbury this year, a Quartet by Haydn, and
Tchaikovsky’s First Quartet.
The members of the Quartet are:
Ofer Falk, who has been a
soloist with Israeli Orchestras and performed at the Bolshoi. He was a founder
member of the Schidlof Quartet in 1994, a particularly significant fact for us
as Peter Schidlof was a pupil Blundell’s School. He is a Professor at the
Trinity College of Music and plays a violin made by Amati of Cremona in 1661.
Rafael Todes, having read Economics at Cambridge went on to
study at the Guildhall School of Music with Yfrah Neaman. He played for the
City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra with Sir Simon Rattle, and was also a founder member of the Schidlof
Quartet. He teaches at the Junior Academy and plays a violin made by Maggini of
Brescia of c 1600.
Dorothea Vogel, having been born in Switzerland studied in
the USA and at The Guildhall in London. She was principal viola in the Gustav
Mahler Orchestra and the World Youth Orchestra. She has appeared as soloist in
Zurich and at the Wigmore Hall. Her viola was made by Rastelli of Genoa in
1800.
Vanessa Lucas-Smith is a graduate of the Royal Northern
College of Music and became a Junior Fellow at Trinity College. She received
coaching from members of the Amadeus Quartet (Peter Schidlof was a founding
member of this Quartet) amongst others. She has appeared at the Wigmore Hall,
and Queen Elizabeth Hall. She teaches chamber music and is a keen amateur
footballer. Her cello was made by the Forster family in England in the late
eighteenth century.
