Classical Journey Tuesday 12 March 2013, 10-12am Live interview with concert pianist Roger Woodward who is playing at Bradninch on Thursday evening and news of other concerts this week

Roger Woodward OBE

This morning the Phonic FM studio will be visited by an international musical star - Australian pianist Roger Woodward.

Roger will be talking about his musical career, and the recital he will be performing at Bradninch this Thursday.

Roger studied music for his first degree at Sydney University and the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music, where he studied with Latvian mentor Alexander Sverjensky (who was himself a student of Alexander Glazunov).

When Roger was 22 he entered the Australian Broadcasting Commission's 'Concerto and Vocal Competition', which he won outright. His fellow finalist was David Helfgott.

Zbigniew Drzewiecki
The following year Roger began post-graduate studies in music with Zbigniew Drzewiecki in Poland, and made his concert debut, at the age of 23, with the Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra. By the age of 34, he was a Fellow of the Warsaw Chopin Institute. He never forgot the kindness he enjoyed as a stranger in communist Poland.

Roger also worked with many prominent musicians and orchestras around the world. He worked with the greatest contemporary composers - including John Cage, Morton Feldman and Karlheinz Stockhausen.

Lech Wałęsa
When Lech Wałęsa united the Gdansk shipyard workers in the Solidarność trade union in 1980, Roger (who received the OBE in the same year) toured the world playing the complete works of Chopin from memory - to raise money to help the beleaguered members of the nascent freedom movement.

Roger has since been awarded the Polish Order of Merit (1993), the Order of Solidarność (2008), and the "Gloria Artis" Gold Medal for Merit to Culture - Poland's highest honour (2011).

Gloria Artis

Since 1992, Roger has been Director and Professor of the School of Music and Dance at San Francisco State University - which he founded.

Roger has become famous for his recordings with 'Celestial Harmonies' - and, for us, the corresponding live performances in the South West.

In 2007, Roger recorded the Debussy Preludes, Books 1 and 2 - and came to Queen's College, Taunton, for an afternoon recital on Sunday 15th July.

In 2010, Roger made a definitive recording of J S Bach's 'Well-Tempered Clavier' - and came to King's College, Taunton for an afternoon recital on Sunday 2nd October 2011.

Celestial Harmonies are currently producing a recording of Roger's concert at the Sandesaal (Concert Hall) in Bremen in January 2007, when he played the music of Debussy, Bach - and Chopin.

Roger flew over from San Fancisco on Sunday to prepare for a recital of Debussy Estampes and Preludes, and Chopin Mazurkas, at the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford this Saturday.

Before that, however, Roger will give a rare Devon performance, at St Disen's Church in Bradninch on Thursday evening - of the full programme he will be playing in Oxford.
