MEDIA RELEASE

Background to Bach

Was Johann Sebastian Bach an obedient servant or an enlightened master? This is the topic of a musically illustrated talk to be given by Margaret Steinitz, Artistic Director of the London Bach Society, on Wednesday 20 February at 7 pm at St Stephen’s Church, High Street, Exeter (next to The House of Fraser).

Margaret is the widow of the founder-conductor of the London Bach Society, Dr Paul Steinitz, after whose death she resolved to continue her husband’s work and use his considerable musical legacy effectively, developing the Society for the new century and the exciting challenges ahead. She founded the annual Bachfest in 1990, the Journal in 1996, and worked with Tim Ireland to produce the LBS’s much-praised website ‘bachlive’, which was launched to celebrate the Millenium.

Among many other distinctions, Margaret has received two significant decorations. In 2001 she was made an Honorary Associate of the Royal Academy of Music and at a special ceremony held at the German Embassy in London in 2006, she received the Officer’s Cross of the German Order of Merit, a prestigious award given to those who have made an outstanding contribution to the promotion of German culture. In her case this was in recognition of her work promoting Bach and his music in this country, an award that she dedicated to her late husband.

Margaret’s talk will examine Bach’s own working environment and contrast it with the challenges that face music societies working today. The more knowledge we have of his life and music, the more we can influence his continued popularity in the future.

Tickets, (unreserved) @ £10 (half-price for full-time students), are available from Exeter Phoenix Ticket Agency (01392-667080) or online from WeGotTickets through the EBS website: exeterbachsociety.org.uk.
