Ruth Molins Tuesday 17 February 2015

Ruth Molins

Two weeks ago, flautist Ruth Molins was at the Phonic FM studio to join the 'Classical Journey' programme and discuss her many musical projects. The recording is now available online. (See the link below.)

The opening music is the tail-end of the Leopold Stokowski's 1941 recording of Sergei Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf" with the All-American Youth Orchestra and narration by Basil Rathbone. The full remastered version is available at various sites online. Ruth and her flute were Prokofiev's bird in an all-day four-sitting performance at Tiverton High School on Thursday 26 February. Over one thousand children visited from all over Devon to hear this classical masterpiece. The narrator was Patrick Romer.

A dress rehearsal on Wednesday 25 February was recorded in Crediton by Mike Gluyas.

Mike Brett was also there to make a video.

Ruth also discussed preparations for Mozart's Flute and Harp Concerto, which she will play with harpist Sally Jenkins and Brian Northcott's Exeter Symphony Orchestra at Southernhay Church in Exeter on Saturday 14 March.

The following week (Friday 20 March), Ruth will play 'Clock Works' with Pete Canter's 'Off the Cuff' improvisers orchestra as a Vibraphonic event at the Exeter Phoenix.

In April Ruth will be playing alongside multi-instrumentalist Jennifer Campbell (Jen's playing clarinet on this occasion) in the Sidmouth Arts Club Operatic Society (SACOS) in their production of Rogers and Hammerstein's 'South Pacific' at the Manor Pavilion. Ruth and Jennifer will also be joined by Sophie Brewer for two 'Flute Cake' flute trio concerts in April. Flute Cake are also booked for the Budleigh Festival in July.

Ruth also hinted at a 'Thunderbirds Wind Band Day' led by Alfie Pugh, celebrating the music of Barry Gray - who wrote the theme music to 'Fireball XL5', 'Stingray', 'Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons', 'Joe 90' and 'Space: 1999' as well as 'Thunderbirds'.

There was no time to mention two performances of Bach's 'St Matthew Passion' with Ottery St Mary and Bridgwater Choral Societies, a performance of Bach's 'Easter Oratorio' with the Exeter Bach Society, and Elgar's 'In London Town' and Copland's 'Fanfare for the Common Man' with Exeter Symphony Orchestra.

Arts Lab at Dartington invite Emma Holbrook and Susanna Mo to present their film documentary on Arts Council cuts "Making the Cut" Kingsbridge Inn Totnes Sunday 22 February 2015

"Making the Cut"
Producers: Emma Holbrook, Susanna Mo
Arts Lab at Dartington: Sam Richards

On Sunday evening at the Kingsbridge Inn in Totnes Emma Holbrook and Susanna Mo from Taunton presented their 40 minute documentary "Making the Cut". The film was inspired by the financial difficulties and sudden closure of the Brewhouse Theatre in Taunton. This was an example of the effects of the 2010 spending review which cut the Arts Council England's budget by more than a quarter.

Artists, students, teachers, directors and theatre managers all appeared on screen to emphasise the cost to the arts and to local communities. The short term effect of the loss of a unique local amenity was considered, as well as the long-term cost of removing the facility for aspiring actors and directors to gain experience and develop their craft.

All the ancillary aspects of theatre production were also discussed, including set-building, lighting, and stage-management. Without medium scale local theatres, opportunities in these professions are also lost. Finally, representatives of local businesses explained the value to the local economy of a subsidised arts venue to serve the community and draw local residents into the town centre.

The screening was followed by a lively discussion about the future of theatre and arts in this country. Sam Richards of "Arts Lab at Dartington" was on hand to facilitate exchange of ideas.

Lively audience participation

This excellent documentary took Emma Holbrook and Susanna Mo two years to produce. The observations of many experts in arts and the theatre - as well as ordinary members of the public, affected by the cuts - are crystallised into a compelling forty minute presentation.

Further screenings are planned for various venues in the South West.

Further details coming to the 'Making the Cut' facebook page

Background

In 1977 Alan Ayckbourn's trilogy "The Norman Conquests" toured Britain for the first time. Included in the itinerary was a newly completed 350 seat venue, The Brewhouse Theatre in Taunton. Taunton Theatre Trust had leased the land (Coal Orchard) from Taunton Deane Borough Council in 1975 and built the theatre alongside the Old Brewery House social club.

For 36 years the building was used as a venue for theatre and music shows, and as an art centre for the surrounding community. The Arts Council England provided funding to help the Brewhouse break even while the theatre's facilities were being used to the full benefit of performing artists and the local community.

In 2005 the Arts Council announced that their funding would cease from 2006. Robert Miles was appointed as Theatre Director, and Taunton Deane Borough Council were persuaded to provide £152,000 per year to keep the theatre open. Somerset County Council contributed a further £27,000 per year

By 2009 Robert Miles had to admit that, even with the funding from local authorities, the theatre had a shortfall in funding of £250,000. An application was made to the Arts Council for £260,000.

After two years the application was rejected. This followed George Osbourne's spending review in October 2010, which included a cut in the Arts Council's budget from £449 million to £349 million per year by 2014.

In February 2011 Somerset County Council voted by a majority of seven councillors to make cuts to council expenditure of £43 million, including all of its £158,800 commitment to Somerset theatres. That was the end of the £27,000 per year which went to the Brewhouse Theatre.

By February 2013, credit ran out and The Brewhouse closed. All public performances and related community events at the theatre had to stop. The administration of the venue was taken over by international accountancy firm, Binder Dijker Otte & Co (which is now merged with Pannell Kerr Forster and known simply as BDO).

By the end of February the borough council had agreed to continue their grant of £152,000 per year, and also authorised an emergency payment of £35,000, to protect the building for future use. (The Coal Meadow itself remained in council ownership.) Outstanding debts to advance ticket holders were £82,000 and debts to artists were £129,000.

For the remainder of 2013, petitions and demonstrations in Taunton sustained awareness of the theatre's closure, while Taunton Deane Borough Council continued to negotiate with BDO to buy the building. In October 2013 an agreement was reached, and the Brewhouse became the property of Taunton Deane Borough Council.

By December Taunton Deane Borough Council were able to enter into a five-year lease agreement with a not-for-profit community organisation called "Taunton Theatre Association". The group took over in February 2014, and the first amateur production was staged in April.

The current production, which opens on Tuesday 3 March 2015 is another Alan Ayckbourn work. The theatre company, Taunton Thespians, are no doubt being ironic in their choice of Ayckbourn's 1986 adaptation of Evans & Valentine's 1922 play - "Tons of Money".

Rabbit Theatre "Dracula" Lympstone Village Hall Thursday 5 March 2015

News from LympEnts in Lympstone:

If you're trying to decide whether to come and see the next Lympstone Entertainments presentation, read what Frank Ruhrmund  recently wrote for the Cornishman newspaper about the performance at the Acorn Arts Centre in Penzance:

"As brilliant as it is batty, Rabbit Theatre’s production of "DRACULA" is a triumph for all concerned."

Directed by Simon Harvey, adapted by Andrew McPherson from Bram Stoker's novel published in 1897, and performed by David Mynne, a founder member of the celebrated Kneehigh Theatre, who comes up with a solo performance best described as a tour de force, it is completely compelling.

The howling of the wolves to the music made by the children of the night, noises matched only by the enthusiastic and deserved ovation David Mynne received at the final curtain, despite his "badly battered body" or perhaps because of it, he held his huge audience transfixed, as if impaled by one of the anti-vampire stakes that finally did for Count Dracula.

From his devouring of flies to his entrance of the tiny tombs, from his doubling and trebling of characters, from Dracula himself to Jonathan Harker and his fiancée Mina, her friend Lucy to Dr Seward and Professor Van Helsing, to his multiplicity of sound effects, not forgetting his finger ballet in the light of the moon, all but a show stopper, this was a dramatic masterclass and he was magnificent.

Not to be missed; you'll be sorry if you do.

Matthew Cann's Antiphon Choir come to Exeter Cathedral A Lunchtime Concert of Britten, Poulenc, Eccard, Howells, Naylor, Whitacre, Biebl & Cann Saturday 7 February 2015

ANTIPHON CHOIR
Musical Director: Matthew Cann

A haven of tranquility and peace, the quire of Exeter Cathdral makes a natural setting for choral music at any time. On Saturday at 1pm, just as life outside was at its busiest, the quire was bathed in sunlight and filled with the delightful sound of Matthew Cann's 'Antiphon' choir.

Antiphon came into existence in 2011 to sing a concert of antiphons in the run up to Christmas. Several familiar voices from David Acre's 'Counterpoint' were in the choir, and also an even larger number of lay vicars from cathedrals around the country. Under Matt's direction, the sixteen voices combined beautifully. (Follow links for the first Antiphon concert, and the Missa Papae Marcelli in 2013)

Saturday's concert was a little different. Instead of visiting professionals, the choir was made up of local singers. Members of the Cathedral Choir, Buckfast Abbey Choir, and David Acre's Counterpoint Choir all joined together in song.

Jason Bomford, Edward Woodhouse, Richard Mitchell and Charles Hughes were joined in the back rows by Buckfast Abbey Musical Director, Philip Arkwright. Among the less familiar faces in the tenor section was Michael Graham, Exeter Choral Scholar and Director of the Exeter University Chapel Choir - and the Exeter College Chapel Choir. (Follow links for Michael's radio interview at Phonic FM.)

Rachel Crane and Catherine Luke joined the second sopranos, and Elle Williams and Denise Kehoe sang sweetly in the soprano line. Sweetest of all was Josie Walledge, who sang the first soprano solo in Edward Naylor's "Vox Dicentis, Clama" - and was soloist again in Handel's "Dixit Dominus" with Laurence Blyth's Exmouth Choral Society at Holy Trinity only six hours later.

With twenty experienced and expressive voices under the capable control of Matt Cann, the resulting sound was sensual as it was celestial. The opening plainsong for Candlemass was introduced by the four tenors from under the organ loft, joyfully joined by the remainder of the choir from the stalls.

Matt's voice was also called into service as he introduced each piece without the aid of microphone:

Benjamin Britten: "Hymn to the Virgin" - with the choir in two parts providing an echo effect.

Francis Poulenc: "Salve Regina" - illogical music making perfect sense.

Johann Eccard: "When to the Temple Mary Went" - in six parts.

Matt Cann: "Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep" - Matt directs his own setting of  Henry Johnson's prayer as a deliciously drawn out duet.

Herbert Howells: "Sing Lullaby" - affecting ebb & flow with a marvellous melody sung by the basses.

Edward Naylor: ""Vox Dicentis: Clama" (Isaiah 40:6) - scripture in stereo with the Cathedral clock striking 1.30 just as the fugue gives way to Josie's salutary soprano solo.

A voice says, "Cry out."
And I said, "What shall I cry?"
"All people are like grass, and all their faithfulness is like the flowers of the field."

Finally, a quiet ending with tenor solo (Edward Woodhouse).

Eric Whitacre: "A Boy & A Girl" - a choral setting of Octavio Paz' extraordinary poem of love and death.

Franz Biebl: "Ave Maria" - the choir separate into two - one male and one female, for a saintly session of Q & A followed by a protracted and joyous "Amen".

The audience, who had enjoyed the hour of entertainment (free of charge) without applauding, waited until the last notes had died away before clapping lustily, and bellowing, 'Bravo'. This really was a very special feast of choral music in a perfect setting and at a particularly special time of day.

Congratulations to all twenty singers for a thrilling performance, and especially to their quietly spoken and hard-working director, Matt Cann.

In the audience was former Cathedral organist Lucian Nethsingha, who responded to the Matt's Antiphon recital by saying,

"That was the best choral singing I have heard
in Exeter Cathedral in over 40 years!"
