with Andrew Gillett
Vicky Evans & Mary Eade

Taunton Sinfonietta
Flutes and Strings

Listed on our website as 'Suites and Concerti' this concert is a wonderful concoction of Flutes and Strings for your entertainment, enjoyment and edification!

Join us at this the start of our new season and brighten these gloomy days ~

3.00 pm on Sunday 9th February at St James' Church, Taunton.

Director Mary Eade plus visiting soloists Judith Hall and Jonty Hedges

Works include ~

Johann Sebastian Bach -  "Brandenburg Concerto No 4" Written in one of the happiest and most productive periods of Bach's life, each of the six Brandenburg's requires a different combination of instruments and of course highly skilled soloists - the fourth uses flute and violin soloists where the latter is allowed to truly soar!

Antonio Vivaldi  - "Concerto for Two Flutes" The only one of his nearly fifty concertos written for two soloists that is for two (transverse) flutes, rather than the more frequently found recorders common to the period.

Ralph Vaughan Williams - "Fantasia on Greensleeves" - Described by Classic FM as "an exquisite four minute orchestral miniature", the piece uses not only the traditional tune alluded to but also the melody "Lovely Joan" which Vaughan Williams encountered whilst roaming rural Suffolk.

Christoph Willibald Gluck - "Dance of the Blessed Spirits" - from what is often said to be the most popular and influential of his works, "Orfeo ed Euridice": noted as one of the turning points in the history of opera. The "Dance" is a "roundelay" of strings with the melody on flutes floating above and together they capture the atmosphere of the Elysian Fields by the intertwining of tranquillity and melancholy.

A free drink and chance to mingle in the interval too!

Tickets available from the Taunton Information Centre adjacent to the library ~

£15 (Patrons/Friends £12 Students £5)

We look forward to welcoming you.

"The Mighty Book" 10am Tuesday 28 January 2014

Gill Hopkins
presents "The Mighty Book"

As January 2014 draws to a close, 'Classical Journey' gives way to 'The Mighty Book' once more.

Gill Hopkins' familiar voice will be on the airwaves to discuss her latest predilections in literature. Perhaps we'll return to the topic of Tom Vowler's first novel, 'What Lies Within'. Perhaps the subject this month will be something quite different.

Meanwhile the musical life of Exeter and Devon continues to thrive.

Josephine Pickering was at Glenorchy on Wednesday for a recital of duets with David Lee. This Wednesday she'll be back again with Rosemary and Philip Henry from Topsham. (NOT to be confused with Hannah Martin and Phillip Henry from Woodbury!)

More details of Josephine's concert, and many other exciting events this week (extensively updated!), are at the end of this post.

The Northcott Theatre are starting a new initiative - a read-through of an up-coming play, open to participation by members of the public. ('The Play's The Thing': Wednesday evening)

Author and promoter of women's writing, Julie Sampson, will be at Exeter Phoenix to read from, and discuss, her newly published collection of poetry, "Tessitura". ('Uncut Poets': Thursday evening)

Meanwhile, conductor Kees Bakels will be at Exeter University Great Hall with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra to treat classical music fans to Beethoven's Third Symphony. As if that were not enough, pianist Roland Brautigan will play Mozart's Concerto No 22. (BSO: Thursday evening)

On Friday Totnes Music Now & Soundart Radio will present the long awaited, inaugural Nonclassical night at The Barrel House in Totnes as part of Soundart's First Spark Festival.
Eliza Jacobs and David Stanley will play extracts from Karlheinz Stockhausen's 'Musik im Bauch' (Music in the Belly) composition, "Tierkreis" (Zodiak).
Lona Kozik will perform her new composition for piano electronics and visuals.
Elie Fruchter will join Lona for a performance of Darius Milhaud's surrealist ballet "Le Boeuf sur le Toit" (The Ox on the Roof).
There will also be compositions by Soundart Radio Creative Director, Lucinda Guy
And - pièce de résistance - every audience member is invited to bring a wind-up metronome and take part in György Ligeti's "Poeme Symphonique pour 100 Métronomes". (Totnes Nonclassical: Friday evening)

Whether you're a singer or an instrumentalist, there is a workshop to suit you on Saturday.

Cathedral Organist and Musical Director, Andrew Millington, will be at Exeter's Mint Methodist Church (Fore Street, Town Centre) for an all day workshop exploring J S Bach's "Mass in B minor". (Choral Workshop: all day Saturday)

At the same time, at Plymouth University, conductor Rupert Bond will lead a highly educational day with Hector Berlioz' "Symphonie Fantastique". Specialist tuition is available for strings, woodwind and brass players. Cost to take part - nil! (Orchestral Workshop: all day Saturday)

Rupert's workshop will surely include several members of Fiona McLean-Buechel's 'Joined Up Thinking Projects, Music' (which has given rise to 'South West Camerata' and 'Nonclassical'). South West Camerata will then rush to the Plymouth Pavilions for an early evening performance of the Plymouth Youth Music Service annual concert, 'Tune in to Youth'. (Details about how to join JUTPMusic are included below.)

On Sunday Totnes Music Now & Soundart Radio will be back in action at The House of Marbles in Bovey Tracey. The plan there is to combine the mechanical sounds of Alex Schmid's giant bagatelle "Snooki" with the polished classical sounds at least eight accomplished string players, including musicians from Torbay and Plymouth Symphony Orchestras, Plymouth students and a special guest double bassist - Pat Butterly. In addition, Elie Fruchter will be there with his 'cello - along with Hilary Lade, Martin Kent, Ruth Ayling, Lindsay Hughes, Tiggy Saint (Carole Tiggy) and John McNicholas. (Transparent Music: Sunday afternoon)

(Specific details of all these events below.)
